Recently, I embarked on a project to create a 3D bookshelf that serves a dual purpose: it not only serves as a fun decorative mini bookshelf display, but also conceals hidden snack compartments.
This idea was originally inspired by Ann Quinn's video on Positively Papercraft, where she guides viewers through the process of building an innovative bookshelf that stands out in any room. If you're interested in crafting your own version of this functional bookshelf, you can watch her tutorial here: Ann Quinn's Video. Ann's version can hold snacks in the drawer too - so technically both versions are low-key craft room snack storage.

In my March virtual class, I'm going to take you on a wild ride to create a supersized version of this adorable bookshelf marvel, crammed with tips that'll make it extra special—that you can soon cram full of snacks.

The Inspiration Behind the Project
I really loved the original bookshelf I put together, but I kept thinking about how to spice it up and make it more fun—because honestly, the more interactive, the better, right?
Then it hit me: "What if these books could double as treat boxes?" That idea totally opened up a whole new world of possibilities!
Materials You'll Need
Creating a 3D decorative bookshelf with treat boxes is straightforward. Here’s a concise list of materials to have on hand:
Cardstock or Thick Paper: This will form the structure of the bookshelf and the treat boxes.
Paper cutter and scissors: Essential for cutting your materials accurately.
Glue or Double-Sided Tape: Used for securely attaching pieces together.
Decorative Papers: To embellish your "books."
Embellishments: Ribbons, stickers, and other decorations to personalize your design.
Customizing your bookshelf:
Want to jazz up your bookshelf and make it the envy of all your friends? Try these snazzy ideas:
Lighting: Tiny LED lights can make your bookshelf sparkle like a disco ball, casting a spotlight on your literary masterpieces.
Themed Décor: Spice things up with seasonal flair—snowflakes for winter or flowers for spring. Or, if you're like me and maybe made a mistake and sabotaged a book cover - slap a homemade paper flower pot together and glue it into the shelf to fill the space of that the butchered missing book would have taken. Happy accidents, right?
Personal Touches: Get crafty with custom bookends or a mini photo frame perched on top.
